When most think of Greenhouses they think of home grown food, fresh non tampered veggies and self sufficiency. But, many may think of the worst side of greenhouses - humidity, dirt, excessive hard work, bugs and time. The right greenhouse, in the right location, is the most important thing in order to truly appreciate having the luxury of being a step closer to being self-sufficient. Let's look at some of these options.

Small Area/Little Time OR Enough Time & Drive:

  • Small Plastic/Metal/Wood Greenhouse
  • Normally 2-3 Shelves
  • Great for decks, small patios, small yard-no yard
  • Best For: Beginners/Just getting started
  • Garden/Produce
  • Plants/Flowers

Enough Space/Not Enough Time OR Enough Time & Drive

  • Medium Metal/Wood Greenhouse/In Ground Greenhouse Box
  • Normally 6x8 in size with a door and vent windows
  • Most likely will have no shelves, you will need to supply shelving and/or tables
  • Great for larger patio/yard spaces
  • You will want to install a floor if you will have it located in the yard
  • Concrete/Pavers/Lumber
  • Best For: Just getting started/Moderately Experienced
  • Garden/Produce
  • Plants/Flowers
  • Sitting Area - Some folks may just want a place to sit and read, but be surrounded by plants

Large Space/Enough Time OR Drive To Succeed Full Sufficiency

  • Medium to Large Metal/Wood - In Ground/Above Ground
  • Size depends on how much room you actually have 48 to 1000 square foot or more
  • Depending on if you want in ground or above ground/potted growing will determine what type of flooring you have
  • A hydrating/humidity system would be best for this size
  • Best for: Experienced to Expert
  • Garden/Produce - You can grow larger produce such as fruit trees & corn
  • Plants/Flowers
  • Sitting Area + Plants
  • Larger green houses can be sectioned off for sitting areas, fruit plants, flowering/house plants, vegetables, hanging plants

Other Added Options:

  • Landscaping
  • Elevated Boxes
  • Underground Greenhouses
  • Fountains/Ponds
  • Hanging Pots

As you can see, there are so many different styles and ways to manipulate a greenhouse into your life. You don’t have to have a huge estate or even a yard in order to have a place where you can grow your own plants and/or food. As an avid gardener, believe me, it’s worth every minute and every penny.
